Kenya’s tourism sector is experiencing remarkable growth, with expectations for steady progress throughout 2025. The country hosted approximately 80,000 Chinese tourists in 2024, a significant increase from 51,000 in 2023, according to a senior government official. This upward trend is anticipated to continue as Kenya targets an even larger influx of Chinese visitors besides visitors from all over the world this year.

John Ololtuaa, the principal secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Wildlife, attributed the surge in Chinese tourist numbers to extensive marketing campaigns conducted in five major cities in China. Speaking in Nairobi to Xinhua during the launch of preparations for the World Chamber Forum-Africa Global Summit 2025, Ololtuaa emphasized the importance of targeted promotions.

“The government, through the Kenya Tourism Board, ensured that Kenya had in-market agency representation in China. This allowed Chinese tour operators and travel agents to effectively highlight Kenya’s diverse and unique tourism offerings,” Ololtuaa stated. The summit, slated for April 2025, will be held in partnership with the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, bringing together over 4,500 delegates from 70 nations. These include world leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators, all convening under the theme “Africa’s Global Future: Integrated, Innovative and Sustainable.”

In 2024, Kenya welcomed 2.4 million international visitors, generating approximately 350 billion shillings (roughly 2.7 billion U.S. dollars) in revenue from the tourism industry. This sector remains a vital contributor to Kenya’s foreign exchange earnings, alongside tea, horticulture, and remittances from the diaspora.

Kenya eager to see more tourists’ arrivals from China.

To further boost Chinese tourist numbers, Kenya aims to surpass 150,000 inbound visitors from China through enhanced digital marketing efforts. Ololtuaa highlighted the use of platforms like Weibo, WeChat, and Douyin to engage Chinese audiences effectively.

He also announced plans to host key opinion leaders from China during the first quarter of 2025. These influencers will explore Kenya and share digital content showcasing their experiences, thus promoting the country across Chinese social media platforms.

In addition to digital outreach, Kenya is rolling out a comprehensive sales and marketing campaign to encourage year-round travel and attract more business conference visitors. These efforts align with the nation’s commitment to diversifying its tourism portfolio and solidifying its position as a leading global destination.
