President William Ruto and United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres officially launched the expansion and modernisation of the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON), marking a major milestone in Kenya’s rise as a leading global diplomatic and multilateral hub. The groundbreaking ceremony at Gigiri underscored Nairobi’s growing international significance as the only UN headquarters in the Global South and reaffirmed Kenya’s strategic role in shaping global cooperation, diplomacy, and sustainable development.

The expanded UN complex is expected to elevate Nairobi into a premier destination for international meetings, conferences, diplomacy, and global policy engagement. President Ruto said the project will align Nairobi with other major UN headquarters worldwide, enabling Kenya to serve as a world-class centre for multilateral diplomacy, international negotiations, and global governance. He emphasized that Kenya offers a stable legal framework, strong infrastructure, and one of the most cost-effective operational environments among UN host cities globally.

The new assembly hall and office complex are designed to transform Nairobi into a modern hub for meetings, incentives, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE). The facility, which will host up to 9,000 people, will be powered by onsite solar energy and is expected to achieve full energy neutrality by 2029. Guterres described Nairobi as a place “where global challenges meet regional solutions,” adding that the city is increasingly becoming central to the future of multilateralism and international problem-solving.

To support the UN expansion, the Kenyan government has committed approximately KSh143 billion toward major infrastructure upgrades across Nairobi. The investments include roads, street lighting, ICT systems security, regeneration of the Nairobi Rivers, and the operationalisation of the UN One-Stop Shop. President Ruto said these developments will improve connectivity, efficiency, and urban sustainability while strengthening Nairobi’s competitiveness as a global diplomatic and business destination.

The modernization project also reflects Kenya’s broader ambition to reposition Africa within global decision-making structures. President Ruto noted that the expansion symbolizes inclusivity, geographical balance, and recognition of the Global South’s growing influence in international affairs. He further announced plans to amend Kenya’s Privileges and Immunities Act to allow UN staff and their families working in Nairobi to retire in Kenya, further deepening the city’s status as a long-term international diplomatic centre.

UN Secretary-General Guterres praised Kenya’s leadership and reaffirmed his support for reforms aimed at addressing inequalities facing developing nations. He strongly backed Africa’s demand for reforms to the global financial system and called for permanent African representation at the UN Security Council. Guterres stated that Africa continues to suffer from historical exclusion in international institutions, arguing that the continent unfairly faces higher borrowing costs despite having strong development potential and economic opportunities.

President Ruto used the occasion to champion a new narrative for Africa, arguing that the continent should no longer be viewed through the lens of conflict, poverty, and dependency. Instead, he described Africa as a continent of ideas, innovation, investment, and solutions. He praised Guterres for consistently advocating for Global South interests, particularly on debt reform, access to concessional financing, and the restructuring of the international financial architecture to create fairer opportunities for developing economies.

The launch of the expanded UN Nairobi complex firmly positions Kenya at the center of global diplomacy, international cooperation, and sustainable development dialogue. With increasing investments in infrastructure, diplomatic facilities, and conference capabilities, Nairobi is rapidly emerging as one of the world’s most important multilateral capitals. The project not only boosts Kenya’s international standing but also strengthens Africa’s voice in shaping the future of global governance, peacebuilding, climate action, and economic transformation.
