Busia County is undergoing an ambitious transformation driven by the Kenya Kwanza administration’s commitment to inclusive development, improved public services, and economic empowerment. Through strategic investments in roads, education, healthcare, energy, and trade infrastructure, the Government is positioning Busia as a key commercial gateway and regional growth hub. The #BusiaFocus agenda reflects a deliberate effort to ensure development reaches every corner of the county while creating opportunities that improve livelihoods for thousands of residents.

One of the flagship investments is the allocation of KSh 3.6 billion for the construction of 6,000-bed student hostels, a project expected to significantly improve access to affordable accommodation for students while stimulating the local economy. The investment will not only support higher learning institutions but also create employment opportunities during construction and generate increased business for local traders, landlords, transport operators, and service providers.

The Government is equally transforming Busia’s trading environment through the construction of 19 modern markets across the county. These facilities are designed to provide traders with clean, secure, and dignified working spaces while improving sanitation, storage, and business organization. Modern markets do far more than transform skylines—they create opportunity, strengthen small businesses, boost local commerce, and give entrepreneurs the confidence to expand their enterprises. As Busia continues to grow as a regional trade hub, these investments will play a critical role in increasing incomes and enhancing economic resilience.

Healthcare reforms are also delivering tangible benefits to residents through the Social Health Authority (SHA). So far, KSh 1.25 billion has been paid to Busia health facilities to settle medical bills, easing financial pressure on hospitals and improving service delivery. At the same time, 445,000 residents have already registered under SHA, enabling more families to access affordable, quality healthcare without facing catastrophic medical expenses. The reforms are strengthening healthcare security and ensuring that residents receive timely treatment while protecting household incomes.

Infrastructure development remains one of the county’s biggest priorities. The Government has allocated KSh 5 billion to construct 225 kilometres of roads, opening up faster transport corridors for trade, agriculture, tourism, and investment. Several strategic road projects are either underway or set to begin, including the Butula–Nambale–Amukura–Kocholia Road (58 km), which is scheduled to commence next month. Other ongoing projects include the Matayos–Nangina–Sio Port–Mubaka Road and the Busia–Ang’urai–Kamuriai–Amukura Road, all of which are expected to improve connectivity between towns, markets, and border points.

Beyond county roads, national transport infrastructure is also receiving significant attention. Progress continues on the Naivasha–Malaba Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) extension, a transformative project expected to strengthen Kenya’s logistics network and facilitate faster movement of goods along the Northern Corridor. Plans are also advancing for the Rironi–Mau Summit–Malaba Dual Carriageway, which will ease congestion and improve freight transport between the Port of Mombasa and neighboring East African countries. Additionally, construction of the Malaba–Kimilili–Bungoma Road is set to begin, further enhancing regional connectivity and cross-border trade.

The Government is also investing heavily in energy and sports infrastructure. A new electricity substation in Malaba has been established, while KSh 1.3 billion has been allocated this financial year to connect more households and businesses to the national electricity grid. Increased access to reliable power is expected to stimulate industrial growth, attract investment, and improve living standards. Meanwhile, construction of the KSh 900 million Busia Stadium is progressing, providing modern sporting facilities that will nurture talent, promote youth empowerment, and create additional economic opportunities through sports and events.

Collectively, these investments demonstrate a comprehensive development agenda aimed at transforming Busia into a modern, competitive, and economically vibrant county. From better healthcare and education to improved transport networks, expanded electricity access, modern markets, and enhanced trade infrastructure, the Government’s development strategy seeks to unlock Busia’s full economic potential. Through the Busia Focus initiative, the county is steadily building a stronger foundation for sustainable growth, job creation, and improved quality of life, ensuring that every investment contributes to a more prosperous future for its residents.
