Homa Bay County is emerging as a key beneficiary of Kenya’s broader development agenda, with major infrastructure projects designed to unlock regional economic potential and improve connectivity. At the centre of this transformation is the ongoing upgrade of Kabunde Airstrip, a project that reflects the government’s commitment to strengthening transport networks and deepening the gains of devolution.

The construction of the passenger terminal building and associated facilities at Kabunde Airstrip marks a major milestone for the county. Implemented by the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA), the project is converting what was once a modest local airstrip into a functional Class C regional aviation hub capable of supporting increased passenger traffic and commercial activity.

Works on the terminal are progressing steadily, with reinforced concrete columns already erected and foundation works underway, including damp-proofing measures using black polythene sheeting. Once completed, the facility will feature modern check-in counters, security screening zones, baggage handling areas and administrative offices, significantly improving the travel experience for passengers.

The project goes beyond the terminal itself. Supporting infrastructure includes an aircraft parking apron, taxiways, storm-water drainage systems, perimeter fencing, access roads and parking bays. These complementary works are essential for ensuring safe, efficient and seamless airport operations as passenger and flight volumes increase.

A particularly significant achievement was the completion of the runway expansion phase in April 2026. The runway was extended from 1.1 kilometres to 1.3 kilometres, enabling larger aircraft such as the Dash 8-100 to operate at full capacity. With runway works, taxiways and airfield markings completed, scheduled flights between Homa Bay and Wilson Airport in Nairobi have already resumed, improving access to the capital and national markets.

Kabunde Airstrip’s transformation is expected to have far-reaching economic and social benefits for Homa Bay County. Improved air connectivity will support tourism around Lake Victoria and nearby attractions, facilitate faster movement of goods and people, and attract investment in sectors such as agriculture, trade and hospitality. For local residents and businesses, the upgraded facility promises shorter travel times and better integration into the national economy.

The project also highlights the critical role of the Ministry of Interior, through the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration, in coordinating government projects across the county and the country. The ministry is overseeing security frameworks around the airstrip, including personnel deployment and enhanced surveillance at entry and exit points. This coordination helps protect critical infrastructure, ensure passenger safety and maintain order as Kabunde evolves into a strategic regional gateway.

More broadly, the Kabunde Airstrip upgrade demonstrates how targeted investment in regional connectivity can reinforce devolution by bringing development closer to local communities. By combining infrastructure expansion, institutional coordination and improved security, the government is laying the foundation for sustained economic growth in Homa Bay and strengthening the county’s role in Kenya’s regional development agenda.
