The United States has delivered 20 new armored vehicles to Haiti, marking a significant step forward for the ongoing international effort to restore peace and stability in the Caribbean nation. The move follows President William Ruto’s remarks at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, where he commended Washington’s support but raised concerns about the poor state of previously supplied vehicles.
The new fleet, provided through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, is intended to strengthen the operational capacity of the Gang Suppression Force and the Haitian National Police. According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, the delivery reaffirms America’s commitment to Haiti’s security and to the broader international coalition working to restore law and order.
President Ruto had earlier highlighted the challenges faced by Kenyan police officers deployed under the Kenyan-led Multinational Security Support mission. He noted that several of the second-hand vehicles provided earlier frequently broke down in dangerous areas, putting officers at risk. His remarks came after a tragic incident in August when a Kenyan officer was killed and several others injured while towing a faulty armored vehicle in Port-au-Prince.
Two weeks after the address, the United States moved swiftly to deliver new, fully functional armored vehicles, a gesture widely seen as both a response to Ruto’s appeal and a reaffirmation of Washington’s confidence in Kenya’s leadership of the mission. The new fleet will provide a crucial boost to anti-gang operations and reinforce the ongoing transition from the now-concluded Multinational Security Support mission to the newly established Gang Suppression Force.
The United Nations Security Council recently approved the formation of the Gang Suppression Force, a 5,500-member multinational contingent with a restructured command framework and enhanced oversight. The new force will operate under a civilian representative and coordinate closely with the United Nations and the Organisation of American States to strengthen Haiti’s law enforcement capacity.
Kenya’s continued participation in the new mission underscores its growing role as a credible player in global peacekeeping. Since deploying its officers to Haiti in June 2024, Nairobi has demonstrated resilience and consistency in supporting international security efforts. Despite logistical and operational setbacks, Kenya has remained committed to stabilizing Haiti and has called for better resourcing to ensure the safety and effectiveness of its personnel.
President Ruto’s remarks at the UNGA were both assertive and diplomatic, underscoring Kenya’s respect for its partners while demanding accountability in peace operations. His call for improved equipment and logistics reflected a broader commitment to professionalism and the protection of personnel. The swift U.S. response not only addressed the immediate needs of the mission but also reinforced confidence in the collaboration between the two countries.
The delivery of new vehicles represents a tangible step toward strengthening the Haitian National Police and the Gang Suppression Force, which have been battling armed gangs controlling large parts of Port-au-Prince. The gangs’ grip on the capital has displaced more than a million people and crippled basic governance. Improved logistics and mobility are expected to give security forces the advantage they need to regain control and restore normalcy.
For Kenya, the development is also a diplomatic success. President Ruto’s constructive criticism prompted an immediate policy adjustment from Washington, demonstrating Nairobi’s growing influence within the framework of international cooperation. Kenya’s approach which is firm yet collaborative has positioned it as a respected partner capable of shaping global security conversations and holding allies to shared standards.
The success of this engagement extends beyond the Haiti mission. It reinforces Kenya’s standing as one of Africa’s leading contributors to international peace and stability. From its roles in Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to its leadership in Haiti, Kenya continues to prove its commitment to multilateralism and collective security.
The new equipment is expected to restore confidence among the mission’s personnel and ensure safer, more effective operations. It also signals the readiness of the United States and other partners to strengthen their support for Haiti’s recovery at a time when the country’s institutions remain fragile and public trust is low.
The development marks a renewed chapter for the Kenya-led mission, reflecting progress achieved through dialogue, partnership, and principled diplomacy. With enhanced resources and continued cooperation, the Gang Suppression Force stands better equipped to confront the threat of armed gangs and support Haiti’s path toward stability.
