President Dr. William Ruto has launched the Tezo affordable housing project in Kilifi County, marking a significant milestone in the government’s ambitious plan to provide quality and affordable housing while spurring economic growth and creating employment opportunities for local residents.

Located along the Kilifi-Malindi Road, the project will see the construction of 1,000 housing units, positioning it as one of the largest housing initiatives in the coastal region. The project, which sits on five acres of land, will feature 200 social housing units, 600 affordable housing units, and 200 market-rate units. In addition to residential spaces, it will include commercial centers, a clubhouse, a basketball court, a kindergarten, playgrounds, green spaces, and a secure boundary wall, ensuring a holistic and sustainable community.

Speaking at the launch, President Ruto emphasized the transformative impact of the initiative, underscoring its potential to uplift Kilifi residents by generating employment and enhancing local businesses.

“This is not just about houses; it is about jobs, businesses, and transforming lives. We are ensuring that the young people of Kilifi get opportunities to work, earn a living, and be part of the country’s development,” he said.

The construction phase alone is expected to create direct employment for at least 1,000 individuals, including electricians, plumbers, masons, and architects, with daily engagement of at least 200 workers. Furthermore, the project prioritizes the use of locally sourced materials, integrating Jua Kali artisans and graduates from TVET colleges to maximize economic benefits within the region. The government, in collaboration with the National Construction Authority (NCA) and the National Industrial Training Authority (NITA), aims to ensure that local skilled workers are directly involved and benefit from the initiative.

Construction is already underway, with foundation work, material procurement, and infrastructure development progressing as planned. President Ruto reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering the project on schedule. “We are on track, and I will be back on April 3, 2026, to officially open the completed housing units,” he announced.

Beyond the Tezo project, the government has unveiled plans to construct an additional 5,000 housing units across Kilifi County, with developments earmarked for Bofa, Watamu, and Mtwapa. These initiatives are set to further stimulate economic activity, enhance living conditions, and contribute to long-term regional development.

In addition to creating jobs and boosting local industries, the project is expected to improve infrastructure, attract new investments, and enhance Kilifi’s appeal as a growing urban center. Increased homeownership opportunities will also lead to greater financial security for residents, while the integration of green spaces and community amenities will promote a higher quality of life. The project aligns with the government’s broader agenda of reducing informal settlements and ensuring dignified living conditions for all citizens.

Ruto urged leaders to prioritize service delivery over political interests, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts in driving meaningful change. “We are not here for politics; we are here for development. That is what leaders should be focusing on—improving people’s lives,” he asserted.

The launch was met with enthusiasm from the local community, with many residents expressing optimism about the initiative’s potential to address the housing deficit while boosting economic opportunities. As construction progresses, the Tezo affordable housing project stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to fostering inclusive development, improving livelihoods, and ensuring that every Kenyan has access to decent and affordable housing.
