Kenya is deepening its partnership with global pharmaceutical giant Pfizer as the Government seeks to expand cooperation beyond access to medicines and vaccines into research, investment, local manufacturing and regional health-sector development. The renewed engagement follows a review of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Health and Pfizer Overseas LLC.

The agreement, witnessed on Wednesday by Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga and Pfizer Biopharmaceuticals Group Vice President for Access and Accord in Emerging Markets Ali Besri, provides a framework for improving not-for-profit access to Pfizer medicines and vaccines. It also targets stronger supply chains, regulatory collaboration and the development of Kenya’s health workforce.

Dr. Oluga said Kenya wants the partnership to evolve into a broader strategic collaboration capable of delivering long-term benefits to the country’s healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. This includes opening opportunities for clinical trials and medical research, which could strengthen Kenya’s position as a centre for health innovation and generate new opportunities for scientists and medical professionals.

A major priority is technology transfer and the development of local pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity. By encouraging international pharmaceutical companies to share technology and expertise with Kenyan institutions and manufacturers, the Government hopes to reduce dependence on imported health products while building domestic capacity to produce medicines and other essential medical supplies.

Kenya also wants to position itself as a logistics and distribution hub for pharmaceutical products serving the wider East African region. The country’s infrastructure, regional market access and established pharmaceutical supply networks could provide a foundation for distributing medicines and vaccines across neighbouring countries while attracting additional investment into the health sector.

The partnership will also require stronger coordination among government institutions and Pfizer. The Joint Coordination Committee provided for under the agreement is expected to be operationalised to oversee implementation, monitor progress and coordinate engagement involving the Ministry of Health, Pfizer, the Pharmacy and Poisons Board, Kenya Medical Supplies Authority and other relevant agencies.

The expanded cooperation is consistent with Kenya’s Health Products and Technologies Local Manufacturing Strategy 2026–2030, which seeks to strengthen domestic pharmaceutical production, research, regulation and distribution. Closer collaboration with global pharmaceutical companies could accelerate technology acquisition, improve regulatory capabilities and create opportunities for investment and skills development.

Ultimately, Kenya’s engagement with Pfizer represents an opportunity to transform a medicine-access partnership into a wider health and investment platform. If effectively implemented, the collaboration could improve access to innovative medicines and vaccines while supporting local manufacturing, research, employment and regional pharmaceutical distribution, reinforcing Kenya’s ambition to become a leading healthcare hub in East Africa.
