The Affordable Housing Programme under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) is steadily reshaping Kenya’s urban landscape by delivering dignified housing, creating employment opportunities, and improving the quality of life for ordinary citizens. Across the country, the Government is accelerating implementation of people-centered projects aimed at addressing the housing deficit while stimulating economic growth and social transformation.
In Nanyuki, the completion of the Nanyuki Affordable Housing Project marks a major milestone in the Government’s commitment to inclusive development. The project, which is now ready for occupancy, comprises 200 modern residential units designed to accommodate Kenyans from different income brackets. The development reflects a deliberate effort to ensure families access safe, affordable, and dignified living spaces.
Beyond housing, the estate has been equipped with key supporting infrastructure to improve residents’ living standards. These include a 120,000-litre water tank to guarantee reliable water supply, solar-powered lighting in common areas, paved pedestrian walkways, parking facilities, and green spaces that promote a clean and sustainable environment. The integration of these amenities demonstrates the Government’s focus on building complete communities rather than simply constructing houses.
The success of Phase One has paved the way for a more ambitious expansion in Nanyuki. Plans are already underway for Phase Two, which will add 800 more housing units within the same five-acre site. This expansion is expected to create additional jobs, stimulate local businesses, and strengthen economic activity in Laikipia County while widening access to affordable housing for more Kenyans.

Meanwhile, in Machakos, the Affordable Housing Programme continues to deliver transformative impact. Following the successful completion and occupation of 220 units under Phase One, the Government has now commenced Phase Two of the Machakos Affordable Housing Project. Foundation works are already underway for the next phase, which will significantly expand housing access in the county.
The second phase will deliver 570 additional units spread across four 14-storey blocks adjacent to the existing development. Besides addressing the growing housing demand, the project is creating sustainable employment opportunities for local residents by equipping workers with practical construction skills, stable incomes, and long-term economic opportunities. The continued expansion of affordable housing projects in areas historically associated with major political figures, but which previously saw limited transformative development, reflects the Government’s determination to deliver tangible progress and inclusive growth to communities across Kenya.
The successful rollout of affordable housing projects across the country has also been greatly supported by the Ministry of Interior and National Administration through effective coordination, administrative oversight, and security management. Working closely with implementing agencies, the Ministry has played a critical role in ensuring smooth project execution, maintaining stability around construction sites, and supporting timely delivery of housing units. This whole-of-government approach has strengthened implementation efficiency and reinforced public confidence in the Affordable Housing Programme under the BETA agenda.
