Kenya’s health sector continues to witness significant transformation as the government intensifies efforts to deliver accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare services to all citizens. Central to this push is the commitment to Universal Health Coverage (UHC), a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which seeks to bring essential services closer to communities while strengthening public health systems nationwide.

A notable example of this progress is the upgrade of Kigumo Sub-County Hospital, which has undergone a major facelift as part of the National Government’s broader reforms. The expansion, completed in 2025, reflects deliberate investment in grassroots health infrastructure aimed at improving service delivery and reducing pressure on higher-level facilities.

The upgraded hospital is strategically positioned to decongest referral centres such as Murang’a Level 5 Hospital by offering comprehensive healthcare services at the sub-county level. This decentralization ensures that residents can access quality medical attention without the need to travel long distances, saving both time and costs.

With the upgrade, Kigumo Sub-County Hospital now boasts expanded outpatient services, a fully functional casualty department, a well-equipped pharmacy, and improved inpatient capacity through modern male and female wards. Additionally, the inclusion of both minor and major theatres marks a significant milestone, enabling the facility to handle a wider range of medical procedures locally.

Infrastructure improvements have also been prioritized to ensure reliability and efficiency. The installation of a dedicated powerhouse guarantees a stable electricity supply, critical for uninterrupted medical services. Meanwhile, the ongoing installation of an oxygen plant and final equipping of the facility are expected to further enhance its capacity to handle emergencies and critical care cases.

Since the completion of the upgrade, the hospital has recorded increased revenue, a clear indicator of rising patient confidence and utilization. This growth not only reflects improved service delivery but also underscores the success of government interventions in making healthcare more accessible and efficient at the community level.

The success of the project has been supported by the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration under the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, which has played a crucial role in ensuring smooth implementation through oversight and coordination. Their involvement highlights the government’s whole-of-system approach, recognizing that strong health systems are essential for both public welfare and national stability.

As Kenya continues to roll out similar projects across the country, Kigumo Sub-County Hospital stands as a model of what targeted investment and effective coordination can achieve. The government’s sustained commitment to strengthening health facilities, coupled with institutional support from key ministries, signals a promising future where quality healthcare is not a privilege, but a guaranteed right for every Kenyan.
