History has been made in Homa Bay County following the official resumption of operations at Kabunde Airstrip, which received its first maiden flight after the successful completion of major upgrades. The milestone marks the culmination of a critical national infrastructure project that is set to transform connectivity across the Lake Region and open new economic frontiers for the county and its neighbours.

Once a modest and underutilized facility, Kabunde Airstrip has been upgraded into a modern aviation gateway meeting current aviation standards. The works include an expanded runway, new turning loops, upgraded tarmac, and fresh international-standard markings, positioning the airstrip to safely handle increased traffic. The transformation signals a shift in how regional aviation infrastructure is being leveraged to drive development beyond major urban centres.

The completion of Kabunde Airstrip stands as a clear testament to the National Government’s commitment to inclusive development. Through targeted intervention and sustained funding, the project was revived and delivered, demonstrating a deliberate policy to extend critical infrastructure to historically underserved regions and unlock their economic potential.

Special credit has been accorded to Interior Principal Secretary Dr. Raymond Omollo, whose instrumental role was central to the project’s success. From planning through execution, Dr. Omollo provided hands-on oversight, ensured technical excellence, and coordinated stakeholders to keep the project on course. His leadership has also been visible in several other development initiatives across Homa Bay County, reinforcing the airstrip’s completion as part of National Government’s broader transformation agenda.

Under the administration of H.E. President William Samoei Ruto, infrastructure development has been prioritized as a key driver of economic growth and national cohesion. The revival of Kabunde Airstrip reflects this approach, ensuring that growth and opportunity reach every corner of the country, not just established economic hubs.

The economic significance of Kabunde Airstrip is far-reaching. It will provide faster access between Homa Bay, Nairobi, and regional hubs, boost tourism to destinations such as Rusinga Island, Mfangano Island, Ruma National Park, and Lake Victoria resorts, and improve emergency response and medical evacuation capabilities. The facility is also expected to create jobs, stimulate local enterprise, and attract private investment into the region.

From the shores of Lake Victoria to the skies above, Kabunde Airstrip has opened Homa Bay to regional and global opportunities. The successful take-off of this project underscores the power of focused leadership, effective coordination, and national commitment. For the people of Homa Bay, Kabunde’s return to the aviation map is not just an infrastructure upgrade—it is proof that delivering on promises is possible.
