Kenya has taken a significant step toward building a greener and more climate-resilient future through a newly signed €9 million (Ksh1.4 billion or 10.5 million dollars) initiative to restore and re-green the Lake Baringo watershed. The project, launched in partnership with the European Union during EU Green Diplomacy Week in Nairobi, is part of four new environmental and climate-resilience programs designed to strengthen biodiversity, protect fragile ecosystems and support community livelihoods in northern Kenya.
The investment reinforces Kenya’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable natural-resource management at a time when climate pressures and degraded landscapes continue to strain vulnerable regions. The program will be carried out through a Team Europe approach involving Italy, Germany, and both national and county governments. Its goal is to restore degraded land, improve water systems and support community-driven climate-adaptation efforts.
Kenyan officials and EU partners outlined a joint plan focused on rehabilitating damaged landscapes, stabilizing water flow and restoring ecological balance in the Lake Baringo basin. The initiative promotes sustainable land-management practices that tackle soil erosion, deforestation, overgrazing and other land-use pressures that have contributed to siltation and declining biodiversity.
Local communities will play a central role in these efforts. The project will strengthen county-level climate governance, enhance conservation training, support data sharing and reinforce environmental monitoring. Authorities say this collaborative model will boost climate resilience not only within the lake’s immediate surroundings but also in upstream and downstream areas whose livelihoods depend on a functioning watershed.
The €9 million investment will support a wide range of environmental and community initiatives. These include restoring degraded hillsides to reduce erosion and increase water absorption, rehabilitating riverbanks and catchment areas to stabilize water flow, and reviving habitats essential for fish, wildlife and native vegetation. The program will also expand community conservancies, promote regenerative land-use systems and offer smallholder farmers new climate-smart techniques and livelihood options. Stronger governance structures will help ensure these improvements are sustained long into the future.
These interventions aim to restore the lake’s ecological health and rebuild the biodiversity that once thrived in the region.
The restoration program is expected to have significant benefits for the environment and for communities across northern Kenya. Reviving the watershed will help reduce land degradation, improve water quality, stabilize lake levels and slow the loss of biodiversity. Re-greened landscapes will give the region stronger protection against droughts, flooding and severe weather events linked to climate change
Local communities stand to benefit directly. The initiative will create jobs through restoration work, conservation programs and growing nature-based enterprises. Farmers will gain from improved soil conditions, better water access and training on climate-smart farming. Community conservancies will receive support to protect wildlife, improve rangeland management and expand livelihood opportunities in eco-tourism, regenerative agriculture and other green sectors. Leaders say that fishing, pastoralism and small-scale tourism around Lake Baringo could recover significantly as the ecosystem stabilizes.
The Lake Baringo project is aligned with a wider cooperation package between Kenya and the European Union aimed at accelerating the country’s green transition. Alongside watershed restoration, the EU is funding the development of a national system to measure and verify emissions, supporting community-based conservation in northern Kenya and helping small and medium enterprises grow within Kenya’s circular-economy value chains.
EU officials described Kenya as an important partner in advancing climate adaptation and sustainable development. Kenyan leaders, including Wildlife Principal Secretary Silvia Museiya, welcomed the investment and noted that it fills a critical gap at a time when several conservation programs have faced reduced donor support. They emphasized that coordinated communication, transparent implementation and strong institutional cooperation will be essential to maximize impact.
The Lake Baringo watershed initiative marks a strong push toward restoring Kenya’s natural capital while promoting inclusive development. By pairing ecological rehabilitation with livelihood support and institutional strengthening, the program aims to help communities adapt to climate change, revive local ecosystems and build long-term resilience. It reflects Kenya’s growing determination to safeguard its fragile environments while driving sustainable, people-centered growth.
