President William Ruto has fulfilled a major promise under his administration’s Affordable Housing Programme by handing over 1,080 completed housing units to new homeowners in Mukuru kwa Njenga. The symbolic key handover ceremony on Tuesday marked the completion of Phase 1 of the New Mukuru Housing Estate, signifying a new chapter in Kenya’s housing journey.

The President described the moment as one of the most significant in his political career. “We have handed over keys to life-changing 1,080 social housing units; these are not keys to open doors or houses, these are keys to homes,” said President Ruto, underscoring the social and economic impact of the initiative on low-income families.

The Mukuru Housing Estate, upon full completion, will deliver a total of 13,428 modern housing units of various sizes, making it the largest real estate development site in the country’s history. The estate is designed to uplift thousands of Kenyans by providing quality housing with improved sanitation, security, and community amenities.

Phase 1 comprises 5,616 bedsitters, while construction is underway for 3,024 one-bedroom units in Lot 02 and 4,608 two-bedroom units in Lot 03. These homes are expected to drastically improve the living conditions for residents who, for years, have endured life in overcrowded and underdeveloped informal settlements.

President Ruto emphasized that Mukuru is just the beginning of a much larger nationwide initiative. “We have more than 200 such projects at different stages of completion across the country, already creating over 200,000 jobs for our young people,” he noted, highlighting the housing program’s role in economic stimulation through job creation.

The Affordable Housing Programme remains a key pillar of the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), designed to uplift the lives of ordinary citizens. “This is Kenya’s Bottom-Up moment,” the President declared, reinforcing his commitment to making bold, people-centered decisions for lasting impact.

With the successful delivery of Phase 1 in Mukuru, the government has proven its resolve to provide every Kenyan with access to decent shelter, and the momentum continues to grow across all 47 counties.
