Homa Bay County is witnessing a wave of transformative development projects aimed at improving livelihoods, strengthening local economies, and unlocking the vast potential of the Blue Economy along the shores of Lake Victoria. Among the flagship initiatives is the construction of the Sindo ESP Market in Suba South Constituency, a project that underscores the government’s commitment to empowering lakefront communities through modern, inclusive infrastructure.
The Sindo ESP Market, which began in April 2024 and is now 75 percent complete, stands as a major investment in the fishing and small-scale trade sectors that sustain the Sindo community. Once completed, the market will provide a clean, organized, and secure trading environment for more than 400 traders, enabling them to store, process, and sell fish and other products from the Blue Economy. The facility will not only enhance local commerce but also promote food safety, improve earnings, and strengthen the value chain for fisheries and related businesses.
Designed as a two-storey modern complex, the market embodies innovation and inclusivity, featuring essential amenities such as an ICT hub, cold storage for fish preservation, a lactating room, administrative offices, a social hall, a children’s playground, a kitchen, and an ablution block. These facilities are tailored to create a conducive business environment and encourage community interactions. The market also reflects the government’s broader strategy to promote local empowerment by supporting women, youth, and small entrepreneurs.
Beyond infrastructure, the Sindo Market project has become a catalyst for local job creation and economic revitalization. Approximately 40 people, mostly youth and women, have been employed during construction, earning wages that have supported their families and boosted spending in nearby towns. The surrounding community has benefited from the growth of micro-businesses supplying construction materials, transport, and food to workers — a clear demonstration of how government investment can trigger widespread local economic activity.

In addition to Blue Economy investments, the government is also prioritizing connectivity and regional growth through the upgrading of Kabunde Airstrip in Homa Bay County. The airstrip improvement project includes runway remarking, edge marking, and ongoing piano marking on Runway 1/4, all aimed at enhancing safety and operational efficiency. Once complete, the upgraded facility will open new frontiers for business, tourism, and logistics, linking Homa Bay more effectively to national and regional markets.
The revitalization of the Kabunde Airstrip, alongside the Sindo ESP Market, forms part of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen devolution and spur balanced regional development. These projects are transforming Homa Bay into a vibrant hub of trade, transport, and innovation, while empowering communities to harness the full potential of Lake Victoria’s resources. As completion nears, residents look forward to a new era of prosperity, driven by sustainable development and inclusive economic growth.
