The Kenya Tourism Federation (KTF) has strongly cautioned political leaders against making public statements that discourage tourists and investors from visiting Kenya, warning that such remarks pose a serious threat to the country’s economy, international reputation and the livelihoods of millions of Kenyans. The federation said Kenya’s tourism brand has been built over decades and should never become a casualty of political competition.

KTF Chairman Fred Odek expressed concern over recent remarks attributed to Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, urging tourists and investors to avoid Kenya because of the country’s political environment. The federation termed such calls unfortunate and irresponsible, noting that they risk creating unnecessary fear among international visitors and business communities at a time when Kenya continues to strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading tourism and investment destinations.

The federation emphasized that while every Kenyan enjoys the constitutional right to political expression, political leaders have a responsibility to safeguard national interests. It noted that tourists visiting Kenya are not participants in the country’s political contests but come to experience the nation’s world-renowned wildlife, pristine beaches, rich cultural heritage, hospitality, conferences and sporting events under the globally recognized Magical Kenya brand.

KTF warned that destination confidence is not created overnight but is the product of years of sustained international marketing, quality visitor experiences and strong partnerships with global travel stakeholders. It cautioned that once confidence is damaged through negative messaging, rebuilding Kenya’s image can take years regardless of how quickly political tensions subside, making reckless public pronouncements extremely costly to the country.

The federation further observed that any decline in tourist arrivals would have devastating consequences far beyond hotels and resorts. Hundreds of thousands of Kenyans depend directly and indirectly on tourism, including hotel employees, tour guides, transport operators, airlines, travel agencies, artisans, entertainers, beach operators, taxi drivers and countless small businesses. Farmers who supply fresh produce, meat, dairy products, flowers and other goods to hotels and lodges would also suffer significant losses if visitor numbers decline.

Industry stakeholders noted that discouraging investors is equally harmful, as foreign and local investment supports job creation, infrastructure development and economic expansion across multiple sectors. They warned that negative political messaging could undermine investor confidence, delay planned investments and reduce opportunities for young people seeking employment, ultimately slowing Kenya’s long-term economic growth.

The federation’s position has been echoed by leaders across the political divide, many of whom have condemned calls urging tourists and investors to shun Kenya. They argued that political differences should never be allowed to jeopardize national economic interests, stressing that protecting Kenya’s international image is a shared responsibility that transcends party politics and electoral competition.

Reaffirming confidence in the country’s future, KTF said Kenya remains one of Africa’s premier tourism and investment destinations, celebrated globally for its warm hospitality, diverse attractions and resilient people. The federation called on all political leaders to pursue their agendas responsibly while safeguarding the country’s hard-earned reputation, emphasizing that protecting tourism ultimately protects millions of livelihoods and secures Kenya’s continued economic prosperity.
