The government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP), a flagship pillar under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA), continues to gain momentum across the country, delivering tangible benefits to thousands of Kenyans. Designed to address the housing deficit while creating jobs and stimulating economic growth, the programme is steadily transforming urban and peri-urban landscapes. From major cities to emerging towns, affordable housing projects are providing citizens with access to dignified and quality living spaces at reasonable costs.

In Nakuru, the programme has made remarkable strides, positioning the county as a key beneficiary of the national housing agenda. The completion of the Elburgon Affordable Housing Project in Molo Constituency stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to expanding homeownership opportunities. The project reflects a deliberate effort to decentralize development and ensure that residents outside major metropolitan areas also benefit from modern housing solutions.

The Elburgon development comprises 220 modern residential units spread across nine G+4 blocks, designed to accommodate approximately 1,500 residents. This scale of development not only addresses housing needs but also contributes to local economic activity through job creation during construction and beyond. It highlights how the housing programme is being used as a tool for both social and economic transformation at the grassroots level.

A key strength of the project lies in its diverse unit mix, which includes 60 studio apartments, 20 one-bedroom units, 120 two-bedroom units, and 20 three-bedroom homes. This variety ensures that individuals, young families, and larger households can find suitable housing options that match their financial capacity and lifestyle needs. By offering flexibility, the programme promotes inclusivity and broadens access to homeownership.

Beyond housing units, the project integrates essential amenities that support comfortable and sustainable living. Reliable water supply is ensured through a borehole and underground storage, while enhanced security lighting improves safety within the estate. Additionally, well-planned green spaces and paved parking areas contribute to a modern, organized, and livable environment, reflecting global standards in urban housing development.

The government has also embraced digital platforms to streamline access to these housing opportunities. Prospective homeowners can conveniently browse available units, register, and track their applications through the Boma Yangu platform. This transparent and efficient system enhances accountability while making it easier for Kenyans to participate in the programme regardless of their location.

Institutional support has further strengthened the success of the project. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has played a critical role in coordinating local administration, ensuring community safety, and facilitating orderly settlement. This collaborative approach underscores the importance of integrating housing development with governance and security frameworks to create stable and cohesive communities.

As the Affordable Housing Programme continues to expand nationwide, projects like Elburgon in Nakuru highlight its transformative impact. By delivering quality, affordable homes and supporting infrastructure, the government is not only addressing a critical social need but also empowering citizens economically. The continued rollout of similar developments across the country signals a sustained commitment to inclusive growth, improved living standards, and the realization of homeownership dreams for many Kenyans.
