The national government has committed Sh424 million to construct a five-kilometre dual carriageway through Homa Bay town, a project expected to transform transport, enhance safety and unlock fresh economic potential for the county. The works, overseen by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), will cover the stretch from Junction Kodoyo to the town’s central business district and Got-Rabuor trading centre, and are set to be completed within 18 months.
Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan described the project as a timely intervention to decongest traffic that frequently stalls the town during morning and evening rush hours. By addressing these long-standing transport bottlenecks, the dual carriageway will not only improve daily commutes but also strengthen the county’s competitiveness as a commercial and logistics hub within the Lake Region Economic Bloc.
From an economic perspective, the Sh424 million investment is likely to catalyze business growth by reducing travel time and operational costs for traders and service providers. This improved efficiency can attract new investors, expand market access for local producers, and stimulate both small enterprises and larger commercial developments along the upgraded corridor.
The project also prioritizes safety, with dedicated pedestrian walkways aimed at reducing accidents involving motorists and pedestrians which is an important measure in a town that has seen rapid urban growth and increased vehicle numbers.
Commissioner Lilan urged the local business community to cooperate with the contractor, acknowledging that while construction may bring short-term disruptions, the long-term benefits in terms of safety, traffic flow and business opportunity far outweigh the temporary inconvenience.
As Homa Bay positions itself for future growth, strategic infrastructure investments like this reflect a broader vision of inclusive urban development and economic revitalization. The dual carriageway project stands out as both a transport upgrade and a catalyst for wider prosperity, promising a more connected and competitive county.
