President William Ruto has arrived in Évian, France, to participate in the 2026 G7 Leaders’ Summit, marking a defining moment for Kenya’s global diplomacy as he takes Africa’s voice to one of the world’s most influential decision-making forums. Invited by French President Emmanuel Macron, Ruto is attending the summit as Africa’s representative, placing Kenya at the centre of discussions on global economic governance, trade, climate action, artificial intelligence, and international security.
The President was accompanied by First Lady Rachel Ruto and Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Musalia Mudavadi. State House said the invitation reflects Kenya’s growing stature in international diplomacy and recognition of President Ruto’s leadership in articulating Africa’s interests on the global stage. His participation underscores Kenya’s emergence as one of Africa’s leading diplomatic and economic voices.
The significance of this year’s summit cannot be overstated. The G7 brings together the world’s seven largest advanced economies—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States—alongside the European Union. Collectively, these nations wield enormous influence over global finance, trade, security and development policies. Participation by invited partners offers a rare opportunity for developing economies to directly shape conversations that affect billions of people worldwide.
Kenya’s invitation places the country firmly in the international spotlight. Notably, Kenya stands out as the only African country invited to the summit, reinforcing growing confidence among major global powers in Nairobi’s ability to articulate continental priorities. The invitation also signals France’s recognition of Kenya as a strategic partner capable of advancing Africa’s collective interests within multilateral institutions.
President Ruto is expected to present Africa’s unified position developed during the Africa Forward Summit held in Nairobi last month, which he co-hosted alongside President Macron. That agenda prioritises reforms to the global financial architecture, affordable financing for African economies, climate resilience, industrial transformation, digital innovation, and expanded investment across the continent.
One of the President’s key objectives will be advocating reforms to the international financial system that have long disadvantaged developing economies through high borrowing costs and limited access to affordable capital. Kenya has consistently argued that Africa faces an unfair global credit rating system that inflates the cost of development financing despite the continent’s enormous economic potential.
Beyond financing, President Ruto is expected to champion Africa’s digital future by calling for equitable access to emerging technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. Kenya will advocate for inclusive AI governance that enables developing nations to benefit from technological innovation while safeguarding digital rights, creating jobs, and expanding digital infrastructure across Africa. The President is also expected to engage leading global technology firms on potential investments in Kenya’s growing digital economy.

The summit comes at a time when the international community is confronting multiple geopolitical and economic challenges. Leaders are expected to deliberate on the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, global economic imbalances, energy security, supply chains, artificial intelligence, international trade, and sustainable development. These discussions are likely to shape international policy directions well beyond the G7 member states.
For Kenya, participation represents more than diplomatic symbolism. It provides an opportunity to deepen strategic partnerships with the world’s leading economies, attract foreign direct investment, expand market access for Kenyan products, strengthen climate financing mechanisms, and position the country as Africa’s gateway for innovation, manufacturing, and international business. Bilateral meetings on the sidelines are also expected to strengthen cooperation across trade, infrastructure, technology, and investment.
President Ruto’s attendance further reflects his administration’s broader foreign policy strategy of positioning Kenya as a bridge between Africa and major global economies. Through active participation in international forums, Kenya has increasingly sought to influence global policy discussions while advocating practical solutions that address Africa’s development challenges through partnership rather than dependency.
The invitation also highlights the steadily strengthening relationship between Kenya and France. The two countries have expanded cooperation in economic development, climate action, infrastructure, defence, and international diplomacy. President Macron has consistently supported Africa’s calls for reforms in global financial institutions, while Kenya has emerged as one of France’s key strategic partners in East Africa and the wider continent.
As President Ruto joins world leaders in Évian, Kenya finds itself at the forefront of global diplomacy, carrying not only its national interests but also the aspirations of an entire continent. His presence at the G7 Summit underscores Kenya’s growing international influence and presents a unique opportunity to ensure Africa’s priorities are firmly embedded in global decision-making, reaffirming the country’s role as a trusted partner in shaping a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable global future.
