Kenya’s affordable housing agenda has gained fresh momentum with the launch of a Sh974 million Affordable Housing Project in Majira, Chogoria Ward, Maara Constituency. The development marks a major milestone that reinforces the country’s leadership in expanding access to quality and affordable homes across the region.
The project, unveiled jointly by Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki and Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki, will deliver 392 modern housing units under the national Affordable Housing Programme. It is designed to provide decent homes while generating employment for local youth, artisans, and small-scale suppliers.
Governor Njuki said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to improving living standards through sustainable, inclusive, and people-centered urban development. He explained that the county government has provided land for the project, while the national government is funding construction, showcasing strong collaboration between both levels of government to promote inclusivity and community growth.
He added that the project goes beyond providing physical housing, emphasizing that it aims to uplift livelihoods, empower communities, and ensure more Kenyans have access to dignified living spaces.
MP Kareke Mbiuki praised the initiative as a significant driver of local employment. He noted that many of the construction opportunities will go to Maara residents, particularly those without formal technical training, ensuring that the community directly benefits from the development.
The leaders also presided over the groundbreaking of new student hostels at Muraga Technical Training Institute (TTI) in Muthambi Ward. The additional accommodation facilities are expected to expand student housing capacity, support technical education, and improve the learning environment in the region.
The Sh974 million project forms part of a growing portfolio of affordable housing developments across Tharaka Nithi County, including an ongoing project in Chuka that is currently 15 percent complete. Together, these initiatives highlight the government’s commitment to modern housing infrastructure that fosters local economic growth and supports the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
Beyond providing homes, the Maara project is expected to stimulate small business growth, create employment, and promote environmentally conscious construction. It represents a tangible effort to reduce Kenya’s urban housing deficit while ensuring economic progress benefits local communities.
With such initiatives, Kenya continues to strengthen its position as a regional leader in accessible, sustainable, and socially impactful housing development, transforming its vision of inclusive, modern living environments into reality.
