Kirinyaga County is fast emerging as one of Kenya’s model counties for development, thanks to a blend of flagship national government projects and local initiatives under the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). From modern housing to industrial parks, roads, and agricultural infrastructure, the county is experiencing an unprecedented wave of transformation aimed at improving livelihoods, boosting economic productivity, and empowering residents across the region.

One of the most notable milestones is the Affordable Housing Project in Kianyaga, which is now 100% complete. This makes it one of the earliest successful deliveries under the nationwide Affordable Housing Programme, bringing decent and dignified housing closer to ordinary Kenyans. The project is not just about providing shelter—it has also created jobs for artisans, contractors, and suppliers during construction while improving the town’s urban profile.

The Kagio Market modernization and the ongoing construction of the Kagume–Mununga–Kiamaina–Gathuthuma–Kianjagi Road highlight the county’s strides in infrastructure. The new road, in particular, is a game changer for farmers, traders, and small businesses. By opening up rural areas and easing access to urban centers, the road will boost agribusiness, reduce transport costs, and enhance market linkages, particularly for tea, coffee, and dairy farmers who remain the backbone of Kirinyaga’s economy.

In the agricultural sector, the establishment of a Goat Artificial Insemination Centre in Ndomba has expanded opportunities for livestock farmers. As a state-of-the-art facility under the Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre (KAGRC), it is diversifying livestock genetics and empowering farmers to tap into high-value markets such as goat milk, meat, and hides. This innovation is set to revolutionize small-scale farming while positioning Kirinyaga as a leader in modern livestock management.

Meanwhile, the County Aggregation and Industrial Park (CAIP) at Sagana has become the centerpiece of agricultural transformation in the region. Launched in August 2024 by President William Ruto, the project is now 86% complete and will soon open its doors to farmers and agro-entrepreneurs. Equipped with eight warehouses, two cold storage facilities, aggregation stores, and four value-addition units, the park will empower farmers to reduce post-harvest losses, add value to their produce, and access wider markets. Protective dykes built as part of the project have also solved the long-standing menace of flooding from River Sagana, safeguarding lives and farms.

Beyond infrastructure, the county is also embracing the digital economy. The establishment of digital hubs is creating new opportunities for the youth in the fields of technology, innovation, and e-commerce. These hubs are bridging the digital divide while equipping young people with skills and platforms to engage in the modern economy, ensuring that no one is left behind in Kirinyaga’s growth journey.

With over 104 locals already employed at the CAIP construction site and thousands more benefiting from roads, markets, and housing, Kirinyaga County stands as a beacon of transformative development. The synergy between the national government, the county administration, and the people is translating into real progress. As these projects near completion, the county is well-positioned to not only uplift its residents but also to become a model for sustainable development across Kenya.
