The National Government’s development agenda in Kiambu County is steadily transforming urban spaces, with the Kamwangi Modern Market in Gatundu North emerging as a flagship project that reflects the “Singapore Dream” of clean, organised, dignified and economically vibrant towns. The modern facility is redefining how public markets can enhance order, hygiene and productivity while restoring dignity to traders who form the backbone of the local economy.
For many years, traders at Kamwangi Market operated under deplorable conditions marked by congestion, poor sanitation and inadequate infrastructure. These challenges limited business growth, exposed traders to health risks and undermined the overall urban outlook of Gatundu North. The new market seeks to reverse this trend by providing a structured, safe and business-friendly environment.
The project is currently 80 per cent complete, with finishing works progressing steadily. Ongoing activities include painting, welding, terrazzo preparation, metal works on staircases and screeding, signaling that the facility is nearing completion. Once finalized, the market is expected to significantly improve service delivery and commercial efficiency for traders and customers alike.
Designed as a multi-functional facility, the market’s basement level includes a cold room, store, washrooms and utility areas to support fresh produce handling and storage. The ground floor hosts key service areas such as an administrative office, a tackle office, an ICT hub, washrooms, utility spaces and a mothers’ room, enhancing inclusivity and operational management. The first floor accommodates a social hall and kitchen, creating space for community engagement and value-added activities.
To guarantee reliable water supply and high sanitation standards, the project incorporates a 40,000-litre elevated water tank alongside a 50,000-litre underground reservoir. This infrastructure is critical in supporting hygiene, waste management and uninterrupted market operations, aligning with the broader goal of building resilient and sustainable urban facilities.

Beyond infrastructure, the project is already delivering tangible socio-economic benefits. It has created approximately 150 on-site jobs during construction, with the majority benefiting youth and women. These employment opportunities have provided much-needed income, strengthened household livelihoods and stimulated the local economy within Gatundu North and its environs.
The successful implementation of the Kamwangi Modern Market has been strongly supported by the State Department for Interior and National Administration, which has provided effective coordination and oversight through national government administration structures. This support has ensured a stable operating environment, smooth stakeholder engagement and uninterrupted progress of works, underscoring the National Government’s commitment to transforming Kiambu County through well-coordinated, people-centered development initiatives.
