Marsabit County is poised for a transformative leap in development as Deputy President Kithure Kindiki rolled out a Sh1 billion initiative to deliver electricity to 6,100 households. The project is part of the Kenya Kwanza government’s broader strategy to reduce regional disparities and accelerate socio-economic growth in historically underserved areas.
Under the plan, Laisamis Constituency will receive Sh142 million to connect 508 homes, while the wider project will expand access through the Mount Kulal Power Station and sustained supply from the Lake Turkana Wind Power Project, which contributes 310 megawatts to the national grid. Analysts note that electricity access is a critical driver of education, business development, and security, and that Marsabit’s longstanding energy deficit has constrained economic opportunities and public service delivery.
Kindiki’s leadership in spearheading the program underscores his growing influence within President William Ruto’s administration and the Kenya Kwanza government. The initiative is designed around rigorous inter-agency coordination, strict project oversight, and strategic resource deployment, reflecting the administration’s commitment to effective governance and results-oriented development. By bringing electricity to remote households, the government aims to stimulate local markets, enhance service provision, and reinforce public confidence in state capacity.
Energy experts highlight that reliable power access has consistently proven to unlock economic potential, improve education outcomes, and strengthen community resilience. Marsabit, like other marginalized counties, has lagged behind due to infrastructural gaps, but the current plan positions the county to join national development trajectories and demonstrates Kenya Kwanza’s determination to deliver tangible improvements to citizens’ lives.
Beyond infrastructure, Kindiki emphasized the importance of social cohesion, noting that cultural unity is essential for sustainable development. The administration’s approach couples development projects with community engagement, reinforcing stability while empowering citizens to actively participate in shaping their local futures.
This Sh1 billion electricity rollout not only addresses immediate energy needs but also signals a strategic blueprint for northern Kenya’s long-term growth, with Kindiki emerging as a central architect of the government’s development agenda. By linking infrastructure investment with governance reforms and economic empowerment, the initiative exemplifies decisive leadership in advancing national priorities.
