Affordable Housing: Transforming Lives Across Kenya
The government’s Affordable Housing Programme (AHP) is rapidly transforming the lives of ordinary Kenyans by turning the dream of owning a decent home into reality. From informal settlements to well-planned estates, the initiative is not only uplifting standards of living but also creating thousands of jobs across all counties. Affordable housing has become a cornerstone of the government’s strategy to provide dignity, social stability, and economic empowerment.
One of the flagship projects under this program is the Kings Orchid Affordable Housing Project in Thika Town, a deliberate intervention aimed at giving Kenyans modern, affordable, and secure homes. Commenced in August 2023, the project demonstrates how infrastructure investment can directly benefit citizens. So far, it has engaged 400 unskilled and 200 skilled workers, alongside 11 student trainees from local technical institutions and four engineers, showing how the program is a catalyst for both employment and skills development.
The development comprises four residential blocks—three at Ground +14 floors and one at Ground +16 floors—providing a total of 975 housing units. Its design prioritizes both functionality and community living, featuring a mix of studio apartments, family homes, and retail spaces. By integrating housing with commercial opportunities, the project ensures residents not only have decent shelter but also access to local business and livelihood options.

In terms of amenities, the Kings Orchid project is built with the modern family in mind. It includes green spaces with landscaping, secure boundary walls, paved driveways, and borehole water supply for common areas. The estate also provides a community hall, children’s play areas, Wi-Fi provisions, and retail outlets, ensuring convenience and enhancing the overall quality of life. Security checkpoints and controlled access further guarantee safety for residents.
Strategically located in Thika Town, the project is within reach of major public facilities, including Kenyatta University, Thika TTI, healthcare centers, supermarkets, sports amenities, and transport links to Nairobi. This makes it not just a residential hub but also a well-integrated community where families can thrive with easy access to services and opportunities.
By rolling out such projects in counties across Kenya, the government is not only addressing the urgent housing deficit but also stimulating local economies through job creation, skills training, and small business opportunities. The Affordable Housing Programme is proving to be a transformative pillar of Kenya’s development agenda—turning slum dwellers into homeowners, injecting dignity into communities, and giving hope to millions of Kenyans.
