Kenya has announced strategic plans to harness the power of sports to revitalize its tourism sector, signaling a shift toward diversification beyond the traditional offerings of wildlife and coastal attractions. Speaking in Nairobi on Wednesday, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, emphasized that the government is committed to transforming the tourism landscape by integrating Kenya’s sports excellence into its promotion strategy.
“Kenya will be positioned as a premier tourist destination by aligning our globally recognized athletics and rugby prowess with tourism promotion,” Miano said during a signing ceremony between the Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) and the Football Kenya Federation. She noted that the country boasts world-class sports facilities that are increasingly attracting international visitors seeking both competition and leisure.
Kenya’s sports achievements, especially in athletics and football, have already captured global attention, and the government now seeks to capitalize on this recognition. According to Miano, leveraging sports offers a unique opportunity to create new tourism experiences that appeal to a wider and more diverse audience, particularly among younger travelers and sports enthusiasts. The partnership with sports bodies is intended to boost Kenya’s image as both a competitive sports nation and a must-visit destination.
Tourism ministry data reveals that Kenya welcomed 2.4 million foreign visitors in 2024, cementing its status as a leading source of foreign exchange, alongside tea and horticulture. Officials believe the integration of sports into tourism marketing will push these numbers even higher by encouraging longer stays and higher spending from visiting sports fans and participants.

Kenya is already witnessing early success from this strategy. June Chepkemei, CEO of the Kenya Tourism Board, highlighted the ongoing 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania, as a key milestone. She noted a significant increase in international sports visitors since the tournament kicked off on August 2, adding that the event provides a unique platform to promote Kenya’s rich tourism offerings to a continental audience.
With a solid foundation in sports, a growing hospitality industry, and strong government backing, Kenya is poised to benefit immensely from the fusion of sports and tourism. By attracting both local and international tourists through high-profile events and targeted marketing, the country aims to expand its tourism footprint, stimulate economic growth, and enhance its global brand.
