Murang’a County has taken a transformative step in redefining healthcare delivery with the launch of a state-of-the-art physiotherapy and occupational therapy center at Kigumo Level 4 Hospital. Spearheaded by H.E. Dr. Irungu Kang’ata, alongside county officials, this initiative represents a significant milestone in enhancing healthcare accessibility, particularly for individuals with physical illnesses and disabilities.
For the first time in the county’s history, occupational therapy services will be readily available, offering new hope to patients managing various ailments. This development addresses a long-standing gap, ensuring residents no longer have to travel to Murang’a town or Nairobi for specialized care. The launch of a fully equipped in-patient block — the hospital’s first since its establishment in 1961 — further cements this achievement, providing a critical resource for patients requiring extended medical attention.
The Sh20 million investment into the facility underscores Murang’a County’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents. Governor Kang’ata emphasized that the center is designed to serve children and adults alike, offering specialized treatment and therapeutic exercises tailored to foster recovery and rehabilitation. The facility boasts modern rehabilitative equipment, including a static bicycle, multigym, treadmill, parallel bars, and wheelbar for physical therapy, while the occupational therapy unit is equipped with standing and sitting aids for children with developmental delays, assorted toys, trampolines, rollers, and re-education mirrors to support recovery.
Beyond the infrastructure, the county government demonstrated a compassionate approach by distributing over 100 wheelchairs and assistive devices such as walking frames, crutches, and walking sticks to people living with disabilities. This initiative ensures improved mobility and empowers beneficiaries to lead more independent and fulfilling lives.
The personal stories of beneficiaries highlight the profound impact of these efforts. Erastus Njuguna, a 70-year-old former train technician who lost his leg in 2021, expressed relief at the newfound accessibility. For years, he endured painful, expensive trips to distant hospitals. Now, with services available locally, Njuguna can receive timely care without the financial burden and physical strain of long-distance travel. His new wheelchair, provided by the county, promises to ease his mobility and protect his remaining leg from further damage.
Similarly, Esther Muthoni from Kambi area, a devoted mother to a 37-year-old son with disabilities, shared her emotional journey. For years, she carried her son on her back to access medical care, a physically and emotionally exhausting task. The new wheelchair and closer healthcare services have alleviated this hardship, allowing her to pursue work opportunities and improve their household’s economic stability — a true testament to the county’s dedication to uplifting families.
The establishment of Kigumo Level 4 Hospital’s therapy center, alongside Muriranjas and Kirwara Level 4 facilities, signifies a broader strategy to decentralize essential healthcare services. By expanding these vital services to more regions, Murang’a County is fostering a more inclusive and accessible healthcare system, positioning itself as a model of progressive governance.
In the words of Governor Kang’ata, this initiative is more than a healthcare investment; it is a promise to ensure every resident, regardless of their physical abilities, can live a dignified, empowered, and healthier life. The ripple effects of this initiative — from improved patient recovery rates to economic empowerment for families — make this a beacon of hope and a testament to the county’s unwavering commitment to its people’s wellbeing.
For years, Laikipia County has struggled with infrastructural challenges, particularly the lack of reliable electricity, which has stifled economic growth and limited opportunities for residents. Many households have...
